Happy New Year - Reflection

"New Year's Eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march ofthe universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that thepassage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights."
~Hamilton Wright Mabie

Affirmation: I make time to reflect on my recent path and progress.
Meditation: Dear God,As this years draws to a close, we reflect on the many events of our lives and in our world. For the many blessings we have enjoyed, we give You our thanks and praise. If we walked though challenges, we give Thanks that You were with us through every experience. For many of us, this is a time to evaluate the path we have been on and make any adjustments that might be necessary. Help us make mindful, spiritual resolutions. We bless and release 2008 as we know that the best is yet to be. Thank You. Amen

Mystical Mystery

"We have a will toward mystery, a yearning, greater even than our will to live. And lucky, too, because our will to live, our grasping at life, is killing us. The will toward mystery is our homesickness for God."

Meditation:

Dear God, My heart is full and glad today.I love the mystery of Your presence and the sweetness of Your voice. Thank You for this amazing journey and all that it contains. In the stillness of meditation You fill my soul with love and light.Thank You. Amen

Harmony

“Be a sweet melody in the great orchestration, instead of a discordant note. The medicine this sick world needs is love. Hatred must be replaced by love, and fear by faith that love will prevail."
~Peace Pilgrim

Affirmation: I am singing in harmony with life.

Meditation:
Dear God,
Thank You for the deep connection we have with You and with all creation. We gratefully blend our individual talents for the good of all. We may have individual parts to sing, but there is only one song in the universe. We join our thoughts and our voices in that unending song of Love. Amen

What Does Mindfulness "Do"?

In the beginning mindfulness takes away worries and fears about past and future and keeps us anchored in the present.
In the end it points to the right view of the self.

Buddhist Wisdom

Guarded in speech,

Hi Rose! Merry Christmas! I became an Aunt today! Kelvin and his girlfriend had a baby girl, Makayla at 5:48 pm. She is 8lbs and 2oz.

They awaken, always wide awake: Gotama's disciples whose mindfulness, both day and night,

is constantly immersed in the body.

-Dhammapada 299, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

The mindfulness is found and maintained by focusing on your breathing...Conscious awareness and attention to inhaling and exhaling.
My mind dances like a flea, and even after all these years it is suprisingly easy for me to get distracted during mindful meditation. It works though, don't give up trying. love, ~R

Christmas

To him, it was not the gift that mattered, but the giver.
~Walter de La Mare

In our material world today, we often get off track. We forget that what we really need in our lives is love and close friendships. It's too easy to take our relationships for granted. It's also too easy to take our gifts for granted - the big gift of another chance at life. For Christians, today marks the birth of Christ, the child who came to bring love and forgiveness to all. Whether we are Christian or not, as recovering people, we know that love and forgiveness do open the gates to new life. When we live in the light of the holy spirit - whether we call that power Jesus, Yahweh, Muhammad, Buddha, or Creator - we find ourselves living that new life.Let each of us, in the name of our own Higher Power; spend this day in celebration of the new life we have been given.Prayer holy spirit, thanks for delivering new light into my life and giving me another chance. Teach me to live in the light of love and forgiveness. What a gift. ActionWhat gifts of love and forgiveness can I deliver to others? What can I give from my heart that will bring someone light and joy? A smile and a hug? A phone call? An afternoon of conversation and play?

Give and Take

... [To] take something from yourself, to give to another, that is humane and gentle and never takes away as much comfort as it brings again.
Thomas Moore

We take different kinds of pleasure in giving. Perhaps the purest is the gift to a child so young it doesn't really know who the gift came from; the pure joy that the teddy bear or pull-toy produces is our regard, unmixed by any expectation of return. When children get older, we want something back from them: gratitude, respect. The gift is less pure. When lovers exchange gifts, their pleasure is often tinged with anxiety: Did I give more that I got? Did I get more than I gave? Or with power: He'll always remember where he got that shirt; she owes me something for the fur jacket. To friends and relations our gifts reflect many things: our appreciation of their lives, our shared memories, our prosperity. We tend to give in a spirit of self-expression.Perhaps the closest we can come to a pure gift is an anonymous one; a gift of volunteer work, of blood, or a contribution to a charity. Such a gift which can never be acknowledged or returned by those it comforts can heal our spirits when they are wearied by too much ego.
The gift of myself can be a gift to myself.
May Santa be generous to you and yours.

For My Christmas Boardies

"The sign of Christmas is a star, a light in darkness. See it not outside yourself, but shining in the Heaven within, and accept it as the sign the time of Christ has come."
~ A Course in Miracles A

Affirmation: I see the Light of God shining brightly within each person.

Meditation: Dear God, On this eve of Christmas, we focus our attention on Your eternal, indwelling presence. We remember the story of the first Christmas and of Jesus' birth long ago. We are also mindful of the current conditions of our world: service men and women who are deployed far from home, current financial situations which may challenge our friends and families, winter storms which have affected people in many different ways, and so many people who yearn for peace but haven't yet learned to be peaceful. Especially in the midst of these circumstances, we are glad it is Christmas Eve! For Christmas is about the birth of hope for every person and the celebration of Your presence, right here, with and within us all. Fan the light of hope within our hearts until it shines more brightly than those things which would distract us. No matter what the challenge, we know that Christ is the answer. May the Christ be reborn in each of us during this Holy Season. Thank You, God. Amen

Buddhist Wisdom

Those of superior faculties and great wisdom get the point right off the bat--guidance doesn't mean gum-beating and lip-flapping.
Truly awakened people with clear eyes would just laugh.
The great masters of India and China only met mind to mind--from the first, there was never any "mind" to attain. But if you make a rationale of mindlessness, that is the same as having a certain mentality.

-Ying-an

On Relationships

In normal relationships, there may be low times as well as high times. It's unrealistic to expect every minute to be perfect and filled with happiness. There may be times when my partner and I disagree. We may want to do something separate from each other, want to spend time alone, or simply be in a bad mood.
Relationships of any kind don't always have to be fun and exciting. Real life is about experiencing emotions of all kinds. We may experience sadness, frustration, anger, disappointment, depression, or any other feeling that isn't usually considered to be positive. These feelings are all part of life. I will accept that as long as I'm communicating my feelings, all of them are okay. I will allow others to have their own feelings too.

Restoring Our Values

"In elevating to a level of demiworship people with big bucks, we have been destroying the values of our future generation.
We need a total rethinking of who the heroes are, who the role models are, who we should be honoring."

Maya Angelou

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE: enough money within her control to move out and rent a place of her own, even if she never wants to or needs to...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE: something perfect to wear if the employer, or date of her dreamswants to see her in an hour...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE: a youth she's content to leave behind....
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE: a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to retelling it in her old age....
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE: a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE: one friend who always makes her laugh…
and one who lets her cry...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE: a good piece of furniture not previously owned
by anyone else in her family...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE: eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal, that will make her guests feel honored...
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE:a feeling of control over her destiny..
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... how to fall in love without losing herself..
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... how to quit a job, break up with a lover, and confront a friend, without ruining the friendship...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY ..
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... that she can't change the length of her calves, the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... that her childhood may not have been perfect...
but it's over...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... what she would and wouldn't do
for love or more...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... how to live alone...
even if she doesn't like it...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW.. whom she can trust, whom she can't, and why she shouldn't take it personally...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... where to go... be it to her best friend's kitchen table, or a charming Inn in the woods.... when her soul needs soothing...
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW.. What she can and can't accomplish in a day... a month...and a year...

Be yourself...everyone else is already taken.

What is Nonduality?

What is meant by nonduality, Mahatmi?
It means that light and shade, long and short, black and white, can only be experienced in relation to each other;
light is not independent of shade, nor black of white.
There are no opposites, only relationships.
In the same way, nirvana and the ordinary world of suffering are not two things but related to each other.

Do Something

I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something;
And because I cannot do everything
I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

--Edward Everett Hale

Listen

"The more faithfully you listen to the voice within you, the better you will hear what is sounding outside."
~Dag Hammarskj

Affirmation: I relax and listen to the Voice for God.

Dear God, There is much noise in life, many voices vie for my attention; My ego with its litany of problems and fears; self-proclaimed leaders who each have a plan; advertisers who claim that purchasing __ will bring happiness; advice from well-meaning friends and colleagues; advice that I freely dispense to others which only distracts me; the wind and snow which are now dancing outside my window. Sometimes I feel like I am straining to hear a baby during a rock concert. And then I am reminded to let go, relax and listen with my heart. Between thoughts and between heartbeats You are speaking softly. Help me to stay tuned on Your frequency today. Thank You God. Amen

Freedom from Circumstances

"If there is truly nothing that you can do to change your here and now, and you can't remove yourself from the situation, then accept your here and now totally by dropping all inner resistance. The false, unhappy self that loves feeling miserable, resentful, or sorry for itself can then no longer survive. This is called surrender. Surrender is not weakness. There is great strength in it. Only a surrendered person has spiritual power. Through surrender you will be free internally of the situation. You may then find that the situation changes without any effort on your part. In any case, you are free." ~Eckhart Tolle

Creativity

“When we set aside time each day for deep communion with the infinite, then, as surely as day follows night, the light of inspiration will illuminate our beings."

Change

"Every day, just as a tree grows, so do we as beings. As you change, observe how your beauty changes. Within change is the beauty of life's mysteries. The mysterious thing called life is not a mystery at all but a natural evolution toward perfection."
~Ron Rathbun

Affirmation: I am evolving in an incredible and wonderful way.

Meditation:
Dear God, Thank You for the many ways that my awareness is changing. My spiritual life grows more vibrant and meaningful each day. I choose to be a conscious and active participant on this journey. Your perfect order is established in and through my life now. Thank You for this day! I intend to live it fully and freely, without reservation. Amen

Thich Nhat Hanh -

I like to walk alone on country paths, rice plants and wild grasses on both sides, putting each foot down on the earth in mindfulness, knowing that I walk on the wondrous earth. In such moments, existence is a miraculous and mysterious reality. People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child--our own two eyes. All is a miracle.-

One act of pure love in saving life is greater than spending the whole of one’s time in religious offerings to the gods.

-Dhammapada

Journey

“There is no glimpse of the light without walking the path. You can't get it from anyone else, nor can you give it to anyone. Just take whatever steps seem easiest for you, and as you take a few steps it will be easier for you to take a few more.”
~Peace Pilgrim

Affirmation: My path is illumined by an internal and eternal light.

Meditation:
Dear God, You are a lamp, a light and a way. It has taken some time for me to see and know these truths for myself. I bless all beings as they move along in their own ways. My path is my own and I walk it gladly. Thank You for being with me always and for guiding me on this incredible journey. So it is. Amen

Group Meditation - December 14th

Aloha Boardies

Tomorrow, Sunday 12/14 is our group meditation Hawaii time 5pm.

I would like us to meditate on self-love and being loving.
We are a like a calm lake. The love is a pebble thrown into it.
The ripples are love touching others.

Please feel free to meditate on whatever it is you think you need. It is the energy of the group that will lift us individually and as a whole.

See you in that holy place. I love you.

~R

Experience

"A knowledge of the path cannot be substituted for putting one foot in front of the other."
~M. C. Richards

Affirmation: I am a pilgrim on a spiritual journey.

Meditation:
Dear God, We want more than an intellectual understanding of life; we want to live full out.
We join in prayer, seeking understanding of Your will for us. We want to be part of the transformation of this planet into a loving paradise.
We know that there is more for us to be and do. Lead us, Lord.

Amen

Buddhist Wisdom

The one who thinks himself equal or inferior or superior to others is, by that very reason, involved in argument. But such thoughts as equal, inferior, and superior are not there in the one who is not moved by such measurements. Why should a wise person argue with another, saying: "This is a truth" and "This is a lie"?

If such a one never entertains a thought about equal, inferior, or superior, with whom is he going to argue?

The sage who has freed himself from dependence on others and from dependence on words and is no longer attached to knowledge does not risk the smothering of truth by engaging in disputes with people.

Beautiful Essence

"There is a place in each of us that is so beautiful, angels smile in its presence. That presence is who you really are. When you can stand spiritually naked, look at yourself and like what you see, you have achieved a great feat."

~Ron Rathbun quote is taken from: The Way Is Within

Affirmation: I am spirit expressing itself.

God, I have always sensed that there was so much more to me than looks back from the mirror. Just under the surface something incredible is happening; I feel it. I have always felt it. Now, I dare to dream while fully awake. In this moment, I sense the wonder and embrace the mystery of me. Thank You God for the ongoing process of creation. Thank You for Your indwelling presence which is the very life of me. Amen

Sufficient

"We each have the choice in any setting to step back and let go of the mind-set of scarcity. Once we let go of scarcity, we discover the surprising truth of sufficiency. By sufficiency, I don't mean a quantity of anything. Sufficiency isn't two steps up from poverty or one step short of abundance. It isn't a measure of barely enough or more than enough. Sufficiency isn't an amount at all. It is an experience, a context we generate, a declaration, a knowing that there is enough, and that we are enough." ~Lynne Twist

Affirmation: All of my needs are met.

Dear God, Thank You for providing everything I need. Thank You for the order that is now evident and at work in my life. I am grateful for Your abundance which flows though me. As I give I receive, lavishly and with good measure. Thank You very much. Amen

It started with people in my life now, then moved to people in my past. I wake up emotional drained. I also lighter like I am getting stuff off my chest.
I feel like i must get this stuff out of my way,to move on.

Buddhist Wisdom

"What is the benefit of exerting mental effort the wrong way?" -Guon

I don't know about you folks but I sure spend way too much time thinking about things that get me no where or worry me. Thinking in terms of gratitude and positivity boost me so I replace the worrisome thoughts with positive productive solution oriented ones.

Unwanted Behavior? - Buddhist Wisdom

You yourself should reprove yourself, should examine yourself.

As a self-guarded monk with guarded self, mindful, you dwell at ease.

Your own self is your own mainstay.

Your own self is your own guide.

Therefore you should watch over yourself--as a trader, a fine steed.

Do the Tao Now

"Do the Tao today by noticing an opportunity to defend or explain yourself and choosing not to.

Instead, turn within and sense the texture of misunderstanding, feeling it all the way through your physical system. Just be with what is, instead of opting to ease it by traversing the outer-world path of explaining and defending.
Don't get caught up in the apparent duality of being right or wrong.
Congratulate yourself for making a choice to be in paradoxical unity, a oneness where all of the spectrum simply is.
Silently appreciate the opportunity, along with your willingness to practice your sageness! "

Wayne Dyer

One Moon One Mind

One moon appears everywhere in all bodies of water; the moons in all bodies of water are contained in one moon. This is a metaphor for one mind producing myriad things and myriad things producing one mind. This refers to dream illusions, flowers in the sky, half-seeming, half empty.

Affirmation:

Wisdom

Wisdom is at home in the mind of one who has understanding. ~Proverbs 14:33

Affirmation:
The Divine within me guides my path. I know what to think, do and say.

Meditation:

Dear God,
In the quiet of this moment, I become aware of Your wisdom. I now let go of all concerns, fears, worries, and resentments. I am overflowing with beautiful, radiant divine ideas that inspire and direct my life. Thank-You God, for Your wisdom and guidance.

Amen

Your Thoughts Show

Thoughts can feel like they are private and hidden deep inside of you. Yet they have an influence that extends far beyond you. What if others could know what you were thinking? Would it change the content of your thoughts?
In many ways, other people can and do know what you are thinking. Because your thoughts are faithfully expressed by the life you lead.
If you're constantly thinking negative, limiting thoughts, people will be able to tell just by looking at you and your life's conditions. In the same way, when you fill your mind with positive, empowering thoughts, that will be wonderfully obvious.
You might be able to hide the specific details of your thoughts. Yet you cannot hide the true nature of those thoughts.
Your thoughts, whatever they may be, are expressed in every aspect of your life. Continually guide those thoughts to positive places, and your whole world will follow.
-- Ralph Marston

Rely on your Higher Power

I wish I could keep in mind that God can provide, God will provide, and God does provide.-- Marie Gubbels

Relying on God for the guidance to deal with our problems seems much too simple. We forget that God was waiting in the wings for our prayers. Even knowing it, as we do now, hasn't prevented us from looking for help elsewhere, time and again.
We may need to choose, daily, to believe that God can, will, and does provide for our every need. Because most of us haven't had a life-changing spiritual experience, we must decide every day to look to God. Fortunately, a moment of quiet and a tiny prayer is all that we need to do. God is never more than a thought away.

I will practice my reliance on God at every turn of events today. I believe I will receive guidance and knowledge concerning how to proceed next.

Become Buddhaful.

Smile wildly,turn your head upward,

Elevate your Spirit.

Happy Birthday Gurudev!

Sri Janardan Paramahansa 1887-1980 to Whom I owe my life.
This photo was taken in my apartment in New York City in the mid-1970's.
Pranam and Jai Guru Guruji! You are dearly missed yet somehow even nearer than before. Jai Guru.
